- CVD and CDV--who an keep them straight?
-
- DVI does look like it might amke it, especially if it doesn't require custom
- hardware. But isn't CD-I the one likeliest to be on the market first?

- Len,
-
- CD-ROM discs contain an extra layer of error correction encoded to help
- maintain data integrity. CD Audio discs do not have this encoding. One of the
- primary differences between CDROM and CD Audio players is the presence of these
- specialized decoding chips, which are a big contributer to the extra cost of a
- CDROM player vs. your CD Audio player from Crazy Eddies. So, the answer
- basically is no, you can't kluge an audio player into a ROM player, but going
- the other way is a tad easier, which is why some manufacturers are offering
- CDROM drives with audio capability.
-
- The boomong Audio market will help bring down some costs, but remember that the
- real cost of a disc , whether audio or ROM, is what people are willing to pay
- for the information. And there's a big difference in a business recouping it's
- royalty, etc costs from 20,000 audio discs vs. 200 ROM discs.
-
- High Sierra (ne ISO 9660) is an attempt to standardize file structure
- on the CDROM. The intent is that any disc encoded to this standard can be
- read by any player with the proper driver software. This does not mean that
- the application stored on the disc can be usefully accessed without the
- originator's control program (search and retrieval, etc)

- Greetings, I'm new to this forum. I will be conducting an "Introduction to
- CD-ROM" seminar for UC Extension - Santa Cruz on October 20. The seminar will
- be at TechMart in Santa Clara, CA.
-
- I need three speakers who can address the following topics:
-
- 1) Enhancing corporate productivity; this includes an overview of current
- applications, benefits of integrating, implementation considerations, selection
- criteria for applications, and products for vertical markets.
-
- 2) In-house publishing; including the benefits of publishing, survey of
- in-house applications already in use, cost/benefit analysis, security,
- protection, copyright, data preparation, and a summary of the manufacturing
- process and costs.
-
- 3) Putting a system together; considerations and compatiblity factors for
- choosing hardware and software, network integration considerations, format
- standards now and in the future, and interface considerations.
-
- If you are interested, please contact me through EasyPlex (73527,232).

- controlled vocabulary refers to a group of about 3,000 terms we use to indicate
- the main topics of the articles we abstract.
-
- These terms appear in a separate field of the record entitled "Topics". The
- control aspect comes from the fact that we use only one form of a term to refer
- to a topic. EXAMPLE: We have the the term 'Microcomputers' to refer to PCs,
- Desktop Computers, Home Computers, etc. By searching the "Topics" field for
- "Microcomputers" you will retrieve all articles in in the database on that
- topic even if the word does not appear in the full text of the article. By
- adding this conceptual indexing, we add value to the record because we have
- indicated the major topic(s) of an article.
-
- I hope this answers you question. Please feel free to ask any others if this
- remains unclear.

- sorry, about delay in reply. between vacation and deadline I've been a little
- tied up.
-
- As I am at the editorial end, I really can't say how bluefish compares to other
- products. It generally works well for our application.
-
- As to indexing, Bluefish does a complete inverted index of all terms in a
- record. However, we have a special field in the record called "topics" where a
- human indexer after will assign controlled terms to the article so that the
- searcher can find articles on particular subjects (i.e., product introduction,
- modems, etc.) (Also see msg #931 for explanatn of controlled vocabulary). This
- indexing is helpful becaus an article may deal with a concept without
- specifically mentioning it by name.
-
- hope this helps. rgds, Bill

- DVI has announced that it will market to the institutions and education
- at the beginning. User need to purchase the board set to play back DVI discs.
- Launching of CD-I has been pushed back. It was supposed to target
- consumer market but it gradually changes its direction to the same category
- as DVI. I don't know which comes first though.

- CD-I will hit the market first. DVI and CD-I have vastly different marketing
- plans. CD-I is a purely consumer product, DVI is currently only appropriate for
- the business and computer oriented user market (training and peripherals). CD-I
- will not be marketed as a computer, only a audio/video entertainment appliance
- DVI has only recently stated its intentions to go beyond a computer peripheral
- thereby giving CD-I a 2+year lead. The world standardization of CD-I in the
- green book will yield a larger market and consumer trust. For these reasons
- CD-I has the best shot at making it in the mass market.

- DVI is going to require custom silicon for decoding the highly-compressed video
- information; there are two choices: 1) Put the boards into the PC's that are
- designated as delivery systems or 2) put the circuitry into CD-ROM players.
- Currently it is equivalent to 2 bigger-than-full-size AT boards (that won't
- even fit into a stock AT) that the folks at Sarnoff say will be down to
- standard AT size "real soon now". It's a lot of chips right now, Steve.
-
- CD-I hopes to be on the market by Christmas '88 (so says Philips) but remember
- the CD-I is a full system specification, meaning you need a CD-I machine to
- play a CD-I disc. CD-I will probably be on the market first; when I was
- involved with CD-I we were targeting initial price points for players at
- $1299-$1499 (real high R&D in there, boy). Our concern was that Mattel would
- rush a "low-end" I-CVD type player to market (at a $499 price point), and
- consumers would fail to see the value in a $1300 CD-I player versus a $499
- I-CVD player. CD-I might make it to market first, but will it sell (that is,
- enough for software house to develop for it?).
-
- Optical media will shake out over the course of the next few years; should be
- real interesting.

- Hi Phil -There aren't any ads on the CD-ROM at the present time. Remember that
- this is a text-only product (except for program files from PC Magazine and PC
- Tech Journal), and, since most ads are graphical in nature, they couldn't be
- accommodated.
-
- However, I don't think there is any cause for concern on the part of magazine
- advertisers -- to the contrary. The CD-ROM will in no way replace the actual
- magazines; it complements them. There is every indication that magazine
- readers will continue to read hardcopy when it arrives; check the latest news,
- product reviews, ads, etc.; and then store the hardcopy. The CD-ROM should
- come into play when a particular information need or question arises. In my
- opinion, the CD-ROM will actually give the magazine hardcopy (including the
- ads) extra life, since the CD-ROM, among other things, becomes an "index" to
- the magazine readers' hardcopy library -- making the old issues more useful.
-
- I can tell you that there is alot of interest in ads, and certainly the CD-ROM
- will continue to evolve, so stay tuned. Best regards, Gary

- CD-I has been delayed for many reasons. Its video chip was one of them but
- it is almost overcome. Now, CD-RTOS cannot be completed. It has many bugs
- and problems. Umm.. due to the change of the circumstances, I would assume
- that CD-I will approach the vertical market first in late 1989. I know it
- was to target the mass market but probably it will not address to the
- general audience so soon. In order to produce a good title, I mean fully
- multimedia product for CD-I, you need a complete authoring environment.
- The prototype of such systems will become available later this year and
- the actual product will be in April 1989 or so, the real good ones will be
- on the market late 1989.
-
- The one thing Phillips should realize is they have to tell the people what's
- going on in the preparation of this new media. People kept waiting for a
- couple years and started to worry about its launching. I only hope they
- will have more good Public Relations and tell people what the real situation
- is. Otherwise, they will go ahead make multimedia products with CD-ROMs or
- any other means. I am not saying it's dying. Actually, I am producing
- CD-I titles. But I just want to know what they are trying to do.
